Henna (Lawsonia Inermis) is a plant which is dried and powdered to create a paste that can stain hair or skin. Henna paste is made from mixing the henna powder with lemon juice, essential oils, and sugar.
The henna plant contains a substance called "lawsone," which is a reddish dye that binds to the keratin in our skin, allowing us to safely stain the skin.
Henna usually stains orange once applied and darkens to a reddish-maroon over the next 2 days depending on the quality of henna and the location where it is applied. The palms of the hand or foot usually stain darker than the rest of the body.
For best results, do not apply lotions or other body oils prior to getting your henna done. Once henna has been applied, try to keep the paste on for as long as possible and avoid water for at least 24 hours after application. You can gently apply a mixture of lemon juice and sugar over the henna paste to help the paste stay on longer and continue staining the skin.
